Running can be a wonderful form of exercise for anybody. It gets you outside in the fresh air and sunshine and gives you some much needed ‘me’ time. This was my primary reason for getting started. Yes, it can be hard to get started. But, once you do you will be so glad you did start.
I am friends with another mom of many who always had the dream of being a runner. I had the same dream but only imagined being a runner. I didn’t think it was something I’d ever really do.
But How? I’m So Busy I Can Hardly See Straight!!
I know how hard it can be to take the time to take care of yourself physically. Not only do you have a lot of things that need to be done (reading, changing a diaper, dishes, laundry, etc.) but if you aren’t in the habit of exercising it can feel next to impossible to get started.
For me I just made sure I got on the treadmill early enough. I knew I wasn’t completing something else that I felt was an obligation. But, truthfully, if it is important (laundry, meals, etc.) it will get done. No matter what it is. If it’s important it just ends up getting done. Time somehow gets found for all the essentials of life. It was time for me to make myself a priority and add it to my essentials list!
This is when I discovered the Couch to 5K program.
I printed up the plan (this was before the FREE app) and posted it in my bird room/treadmill room. Everyday (or almost every day) I would take the time, usually in the mornings or during nap-time, to do whatever the sheet told me to do. Sometimes it was just walking, other times it was light jogging mixed with walking, etc. It was such a gradual process that once I was finished with the program, running didn’t seem that difficult after all.
Just Do It!!
I know it can be hard to get started. It took me a couple of years of dreaming of becoming a runner before I actually took the step to get started. But, I have never regretted it! And, even though it has taken a half hour out of every day while I was training, everything still managed to get done.
Not only did I have more energy to accomplish everything I was working to accomplish, but my children got excited to start running and are now running half-marathons with me. As a homeschooling family this is a great way to incorporate ‘P.E.’ class into your curriculum!
Get Started Now!
The Couch to 5K program is what I would recommend to anyone that is having a difficult time getting started. I know it is hard to find the time but it is sooo worth it! In just a few short weeks, if you follow this program, you will be able to call yourself a runner!
