This past year has been very rough on my poor hair as well as my self-esteem.
In January 2022 my family got Covid. Everyone healed up fairly quickly, most in 1-3 days, except my daughter, Catherine, and myself. We had it for an entire month!!
Then May/June approached. I didn’t really keep track of exactly when it started but sometime in those months our hair started falling out.
Not just a few hairs here and there either. I lost over 2/3 of my hair and my daughter lost half. Talk about devastating!!
I started buying/trying/making/studying anything and everything that had to do with hair loss. I had no idea why it was happening!
I was scared.
I made an appointment with my doctor and had every blood test we could come up with.
After getting the results back and seeing that everything was perfectly fine blood-wise she helped reassure me by showing me her hair (the re-growth) and letting me know that it was likely caused by Covid and that it would indeed grow back, as hers was growing back.
The one thing she did tell me was to make sure I consumed 80-100 grams of protein a day as this is what our hair is built of. As my hair grows back it will need the protein! No problem. I eat an animal-based diet with lots of beef, butter, and bacon, as well as dairy and chicken. Tons of protein there!!
But my hair was still falling out! It didn’t stop for another month after my doctor’s appointment! My hair loss was causing me to almost despair. All my focus was on how to get my hair to grow back and grow back quickly.
Here’s what I tried and what I think is actually helping (it’s still growing back).
First off, I had my hair cut. It was still in the falling out stage so this may have been done pre-maturely but I felt better immediately at least.
Second, I invested in a 100% Mulberry Silk pillowcase and a 100% Silk scarf (eBay) to tie my hair up in. I didn’t want to take any chances with any of my older hair or my precious new growth!
I increased my collagen. I put the collagen powder in my tea and coffee. Every cup. This is the exact brand I use. It’s great because you can’t even taste it.
I started following an animal-based diet, high in proteins and healthy fat. Not only will this help my hair but I’ve noticed that I feel much better! Way less inflammation in my body, a flatter stomach, and more muscle definition! Woo hoo!!
I use this sandalwood comb to brush my hair. I have another brush that I occasionally use as well but I primarily use this sandalwood comb. It is so gentle on my hair and doesn’t get static-y, which is a big problem in the area I live in.
I found a hairstyle that worked to cover up my thin spots. I have a thin spot (it’s starting to fill in now) on the upper back of my head where my calic is. When I style my hair with a tails up or French Twist with a Flexi-Flip I’m able to fan my hair out a bit to cover up the thin spot! Plus the clip doesn’t tear at my hair so it helps keep what hair I have left (as well as my precious new growth!) safe and whole.
I also learned about hair powder! This stuff works miracles! I use it to fill in my thin spots and my temples. I get it on subscribe and save so I don’t even have to think about when to order it!
I started incorporating a weekly egg hair mask. You have to try this!! I had no idea how great my hair would feel!! It’s so soft and just lays differently. All I do is put a blended egg into my damp hair and let it sit for a half hour to an hour. Then I rinse it out and wash/condition it as usual! Incredible difference in how my hair feels!
I ONLY use sulfate-free shampoos. I’ve been doing this for a few years now and noticed new hair growth when I started this.
I used to wash my hair every day but now I’m washing every other day and am working myself into every 3-4 days. It’s a process as my hair looks oily so fast because of how fine it is.
And, my newest experiment is with the Hair Inversion Method. Go onto Youtube and look it up! You basically massage your scalp and hang your head upside down for four minutes. Many are reporting 1-4″ of growth in just a week’s time! Average growth is 1/2″ so an inch would be incredible!
I figure I don’t really have anything to lose. My scalp could benefit from the massage so why not? I’m massaging with argan oil or conditioner and only once a day for the suggested week.
I’ll have to let you know how it goes!
Do you or anyone you know suffer from hair loss? Whether unexplained or from Covid? Please let me know if you’ve found anything that has helped you!
